(1100) Assessing Mechanical Ventilation Training for ICU Clinicians: A Global Needs Assessment Survey

Introduction: Mechanical ventilation is one of the most common life-sustaining therapies utilized in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. However, the current status of mechanical ventilation education is unknown across different regions, resource settings, and ICU environments. Understanding gaps and opportunities to improve mechanical ventilation education has significant public health implications.

Methods: The survey was distributed by the survey research center to Checklist for Early

Recognition and Treatment of Acute Illness and Injury (CERTAIN) program participants via email and shared on social platforms.

Results: A total of 1,386 emails were sent, with 739 opened (53%). Among those who opened the survey, 86 (11.6%) completed it, and an additional 91 respondents completed the survey through social platforms. In total, 117 respondents (66.1%) reported using mechanical ventilation protocols, bundles, or checklists, while 60 respondents (33.9%) did not use these tools. The most challenging topics identified by respondents included manage acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), lung protective ventilation strategies, and the physiologic effects of ventilator settings. Most respondents favored enhanced hands-on learning at the bedside, simulation exercises, and interactive online modules to advance their mechanical ventilation skills.

Conclusions: The international survey highlights substantial variability and gaps in mechanical ventilation (MV) training among ICU clinicians worldwide. Addressing these areas through targeted training programs can elevate standards of care in ICUs globally, leading to improved patient outcomes.
