(1078) Critical Care Morning Report

Introduction: Morning report has long been a cornerstone of daily education in medical residencies. At Louisiana State University Health Shreveport, we assessed the knowledge and confidence levels of internal medicine residents before and after morning reports focusing on various ICU conditions. The aim was to enhance residents' knowledge of guideline-directed management and boost their confidence in managing critically ill patients.

Methods: This single centered prospective study, conducted from January 2024 to July 2024, involved internal medicine residents. Monthly morning reports covered common ICU conditions, including ARDS, hypertensive emergency, DKA, and shock. Each session discussed the pathophysiology and current guideline management, followed by a patient case from our institution to illustrate real-world application and challenges, with participation from the attending physician who treated the patient. Pre- and post-surveys were conducted at each session aiming to determine residents' perceived understanding of management guidelines, potential complications, and confidence in managing the condition. The post-survey evaluated whether the presentation enhanced their knowledge, provided sufficient education on complications, and improved their confidence.

Results: A total of 158 pre- and post-surveys were collected over five sessions, averaging 31 residents per session. Initially, 31% (n=49) of residents reported lacking knowledge of guideline management, which improved to 89% (n=140) post presentation (p < 0.001). Additionally, there was a notable improvement in understanding of potential complications, rising from 64% (n=101) to 97% (n=154) (p < 0.001). Confidence in managing patients with these conditions significantly increased from 34% (n=54) to 91% (n=143) (p < 0.001).

Conclusions: The implementation of the critical care morning report has significantly improved our residents’ knowledge of guideline-directed management and potential complications, as well as enhanced their confidence in caring for critically ill patients. Participating in critical care rotations can be daunting, but increased exposure to these situations in a non-judgmental and educational environment has proven beneficial.
