(113) Drivers in Burnout for Critical Care APPs

Introduction: There is an increasing interest in studying the drivers of burnout in medical professionals, though very few studies looking specifically at burnout in Critical Care Advance Practice Providers (APP). Determining underlying factors that contribute to burnout will allow for targeted interventions to decrease burnout. This study aimed to compare whether overnight shifts contributed specifically to burnout in critical care APPs.

Methods: Critical Care APPs from 16 units at Emory Healthcare completed the Professional Well-being Academic Consortium survey, a validated tool, which evaluates well-being and professional fulfillment. From September 12- October 22, 2024 all APPs received a weekly email with a unique link that invited them to participate in the survey. The survey contained 100 questions addressing professional fulfillment, burnout, and demographics. A two tailed T-test was performed to test for statistical significance between dayshift and nightshift.

Results: Fifty-one APPs from sixteen different Emory ICUs completed the survey for a 25.5% response rate. APPs who worked nightshift experienced significantly less burnout compared to dayshift providers (p=0.021). There was no significant difference in professional fulfillment between dayshift and nightshift. Other subcategories of peer support, meaningfulness of work, supportive leadership, and efficiency of clinical practice also had no significant difference between the two groups.

Conclusions: Our survey found that nightshift Critical Care APPs experienced significantly less burnout compared to dayshift providers. Further qualitative research is needed to better understand the different factors between dayshift and nightshift that may contribute to our findings.
