Pulse oximetry, a source of racial bias in the ICU, is overseen by regulatory bodies and industry. The International Organization for Standardization will be updating the ISO 80602 standards for regulatory approval, which will have implications for future pulse oximeter devices and interpretation of readings. The session will include an interim update; discussion on how Standards/FDA Clearance works; implications from Section 1557 of the ACA; and what needs to be done to avoid technolocy created health inequity. The speaker is a member of the standards committee and will discuss the updated approval standards, implications for practice, controversial issues, and the path forward for health equity related to pulse oximetry.
