In 2023, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) reported extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support in more than 200,000 children and adults worldwide. Recent advances in bedside neuromonitoring and brain imaging have improved our understanding of the incidence and mechanisms of neurologic injury in ECMO, which remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. This session will shed light on the epidemiology of brain injury as well as the role of neuromonitoring modalities in understanding mechanisms of brain injury and improving outcomes. The latest recommendations from ELSO on follow-up for children will also be discussed.
