Critical care admissions for opioid overdose and complications related to opioid use disorder (OUD) have increased during the past decade. More than ever, critical care practitioners are faced with treating opioid withdrawal or polysubstance withdrawal in addition to other comorbidities leading to hospital admission. Speakers will review evidence on treatment approaches for OUD in the ICU to reduce the likelihood of patients leaving against medical advice, as well as opportunities to connect with rehabilitation programs and improve overall patient outcomes. The use of methadone and buprenorphine for general pain management in the ICU will be discussed.
