What's New in Pediatric Liver Intensive Care? Joint SCCM/ESPNIC Session

Liver intensive care is an ever-evolving field. This session will explore up-to-date information on important areas of liver intensive care for the day-to-day management of these complex patients. Speakers will address recent advances in the diagnosis and management of hepatopulmonary syndrome, extracorporeal support over and above the most commonly used continuous kidney replacement therapy, and the commonly ignored but important contribution of nutrition in managing children with liver failure.

Learning Objectives:

  • Distinguish acute-on-chronic liver failure from acute liver failure and decompensated liver disease
  • Discuss unique aspects of nutrition management for patients with liver failure, including whether to restrict proteins or liberalize calories
  • Describe diagnosis and management of hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS), including considering HPS for any child with decompensated cirrhosis who presents with hypoxia and the role of various therapeutic agents such as nitric oxide
  • Differentiate various causes of acute kidney injury in children with liver disease, such as hypovolemia, acute tubular necrosis, and HPS, as well as new diagnostic criteria for HRS, pathophysiology, and treatment, especially terlipressin
