Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC
This session will describe how to avoid the papercuts of patient care that ultimately worsen patient morbidity and mortality and how to limit iatrogenesis imperfecta in the course of acute kidney injury (AKI). Specifically, in the setting of sepsis, shock, and multiorgan failure, the influence of AKI on non-kidney organ function (heart, lung, brain, immunity, gut, hematologic) will be discussed, as well as the nuts and bolts of optimizing and advocating for attention to fluid and regulation, optimizing drug delivery and pharmacotherapy, data on integration of nutrition, setting goals and practicing safe kidney support therapies, patient mobility and liberation, and educating the family and patient about short- and longer-term consequences of AKI in critical illness.
