This full-day skills course covers airway and mechanical ventilation management for the critically ill patient using didactic discussion, hands-on learning, and simulation-based exercises. Attendees will access all the course lectures before attending the in-person skills-only portion of the course. The skills portion will provide attendees with approaches to airway assessment, emergent intubation, airway management pharmacology, and rescue techniques for maintaining ventilation, in addition to traditional and novel techniques for difficult airway management in adult patients. Mechanical ventilation topics include indications, contraindications, and benefits of ventilatory support modes. Attendees will learn and practice with expert faculty at skill stations encompassing laryngoscopy, fiberoptic intubation, surgical approaches to airway establishment, and rescue strategies. Skill stations on mechanical ventilation focus on mode selection, troubleshooting patient-ventilator desynchrony, and alternative modes available for the critically ill adult patient.
