Global health initiatives focus on clinical service, education, infrastructure, and research. Too often, these efforts are built on cracked health system foundations and assumptions about what fundamental critical care is in place. Clinicians in well-resourced settings are shocked at the gaps in resource-constrained settings. Essential emergency and critical care is the solution, providing the care that should be provided to all critically ill patients in all hospitals in the world.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze care gaps affecting critically ill patients in resource-constrained settings
  • Discuss application of essential emergency and critical care (EECC) concepts to decrease postoperative mortality, decrease ICU admissions, and improve pandemic preparedness
  • Discuss implementation of vital signs-directed therapy to improve quality of care
  • Discuss training of the global workforce
  • Explore global collaboration to ensure lifesaving care for critically ill patients
