Learning health systems (LHSs) systematically integrate internal data and experience with external evidence to improve clinical practice, resulting in higher-quality, safer, and more efficient patient care, and healthcare institutions become better places to work. LHSs are characterized by a culture of continuous learning and improvement, along with the systematic cataloging and application of evidence in real time to guide care. Embedded IT methodology can be used to share new evidence with clinicians to improve decision-making. Infrastructure is leveraged to include patients and families as members of the learning team. Iterative data capture and analysis inform care experiences to improve care, and outcomes are continually assessed to refine processes and training to create a learning and improvement feedback cycle. Speakers are working to incorporate LHS technologies, data, and culture to improve the care of infants and children on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
