Controversies in Liver Intensive Care

The care of children with liver failure often presents challenges because, while the disease is rare, it can be life-threatening. In this session, various controversies in liver intensive care will be explored. Diverse multiprofessional speakers will address controversies in various aspects of liver intensive care, such as listing and delisting for transplant, acute-on-chronic liver failure, and controversies in hepatorenal syndrome, to help attendees in their day-to-day management of these children.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify when to list and when not to list for liver transplant, especially in the setting of organ shortage
  • Explore various noninvasive methods of neurologic monitoring and implement multimodal neuromonitoring protocols in the ICU
  • Discuss the latest advancements in diagnosis and management of acute kidney injury in children with liver disease, especially after the introduction of terlipressin for hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), including indications and contraindications for various pharmacologic agents for HRS
