Traditional approaches to ECMO included prolonged intubation, mechanical ventilation, and deep sedation. However, as experience with ECMO grows among multiprofessional teams, many patients can be extubated, liberated from mechanical ventilation, and safely and effectively mobilized even while receiving prolonged ECMO support. These approaches are especially important in patients where the goal is bridge to lung transplantation.
