This session will present findings from key clinical trials on surrogate decision-making in the ICU. Speakers will make recommendations on how to apply these results and reflect on future directions for research. Recent studies show increasing use of mechanical ventilation among people with dementia, despite little evidence of benefit. Data will be presented on the use of mechanical ventilation among older ICU patients, and strategies will be discussed for achieving goal-concordant care in people with dementia. Time-limited trials may help navigate the uncertainty of critical illness, but definitions and implementation of time-limited trials are poorly understood. Speakers will discuss time-limited trials including definitions, implementation, and real-world examples.
