Older adults are disproportionately represented in the critical care setting because of sheer demographics, and they are more likely to decompensate during episodes of illness with less refractory capacity. The illness might resolve, but the sequelae of critical illness can be devastating. The age-friendly health systems movement, led by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, addresses older patients' challenges. This session will review data reflecting improved outcomes for older adults and their families. It will describe age-friendly approaches to critical care, actionable opportunities, implementation successes, and the quality metrics appropriate to this setting.
