This session will discuss the impact of patient-centered care guidelines, as well as methods for effectively implementing shared decision-making in the ICU, including communicating complex information, eliciting patient values, and using decision-making tools while navigating the unique challenges of this setting to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Developing strategies for managing challenging personalities and effectively communicating with patients and families who exhibit contrarian mindsets or oppositional defiant personalities will be shared.
