Adult critical care training in the US has become fragmented because multiple Boards offer subspecialty certification in critical care. Nonetheless, the program requirements for fellowships and the blueprints for the Board examinations have significant overlaps in the required knowledge and skills. The SCCM Critical Care as a Specialty Taskforce brought key stakeholders together to determine the common knowledge and skills that every intensivist should have, regardless of base specialty, using a modified Delphi approach. Distribution of this list to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and Boards that offer critical care training should help harmonize these training pathways in the future.
