The speaker will summarize the current understanding of what happens to the circadian rhythm and melatonin levels of adults and children when they are critically ill. The speaker will discuss the importance of an intact circadian rhythm and what could be the implications of dysregulation. Finally, the speaker will discuss what this evidence tells us about how to intervene to preserve the circadian rhythm and how that may improve outcomes. This will be a good overview of what we know about the chronobiology of critical illness and where the field needs to go to discern maladaptive and adaptive changes to better design interventional trials.
