Dr. Kathleen To is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, R Adam Cowley Shock Trauma Center. She is also the Section Chief for Surgical Critical Care at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. During the initial phase of COVID, she served as the Director for Critical Care Response to COVID in the VA Maryland Health Care System. Dr. To received her medical degree from Duke University, completed General Surgery residency at Loma Linda University, then did Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery fellowships at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. To is board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. To’s clinical and academic interests are in emergency surgery, critical care, models of care, patient outcomes, patient safety and process improvement. She was the inaugural recipient of the American College of Surgeons Thomas R Russell MD FACS Faculty Research Fellowship for her work on Emergency General Surgery Models of Care. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. She has been active in the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS); previously active in the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) and the Surgical Infections Society (SIS). Within SCCM, she has served as the chair of the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee, an inaugural member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and has served multiple leadership roles on the SCCM Surgery Section Executive Leadership Team, including chair of the SCCM Surgery Section (2023-24), remains active on a number of other SCCM/ACCM committees, including the SCCM Program Planning Committee.
