Dr. Carlos L. Alviar is a dual boarded critical care cardiologist who serves as assistant professor of Cardiology at New York University Grossman School of Medicine and as the director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and ECMO Program at Bellevue Hospital Center. He received his medical degree from CES University in Colombia and completed his residency and chief resident year at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital/Columbia University, followed by a fellowship in cardiology at NYU and then critical care medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Alviar is a member of the leadership council of the ACC Critical Care Cardiology Section where he also serves as the chair of the international outreach working group and education and webinars working group. He is a member of the ACC simulation working group and has led the CICU simulation stations over the last 3 years, including the design of a cardiogenic shock escape room for ACC.25. He is also part of the cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest study group of the Association for Acute Cardiovascular Care of the European Society of Cardiology and a member of the cardiopulmonary network of CHEST. His academic work includes research endeavors in mechanical ventilation in the cardiovascular patient, cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac arrest. Dr. Alviar has published numerous manuscripts and book chapters and has received several clinical and research awards. He has presented his work at numerous national and international meetings and he is passionate about research and education.
