Melania M. Bembea, MD, MPH, PhD is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) and Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University. She is an attending physician in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, where she serves as Director of the ECMO Program. Dr. Bembea was founding co-chair of the Pediatric ECMO Research Collaborative (PediECMO) between the PALISI Network and ELSO and co-chaired the Pediatric Organ Dysfunction Information Update Mandate (PODIUM) Collaborative. Her research group focuses on developing imaging and plasma brain injury biomarkers in critically-ill children, with the overarching goal of improving neuromonitoring and neurologic outcomes. Dr. Bembea is principal investigator for the ongoing NIH/NINDS-funded Biomarkers of Brain Injury in Critically-Ill Children on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (BEAM) study and MPI for the Training for Clinician Scientists in Pediatric Critical Cardiopulmonary Disease T32 program.
