Rafał Kopańczyk is a Polish born, American critical care anesthesiologist trained at Medical College of Wisconsin and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Currently, he is an assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care at the Ohio State University where he is also a medical ECMO director.
He received his undergrad education at the University of Illinois in Chicago and medical degree at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.
His professional interests include point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS), extracorporeal life support, cardiothoracic critical care, and leadership. During COVID, he led multiple projects, including use of POCUS to diagnose right ventricular failure on ECMO, long-COVID narrative review for anesthesiologists, review of hypoxemia on ECMO, and cardiothoracic surgical critical care consortium. Currently, he is involved in evaluating gabepntnoids for pain after cardiac surgery, leading Delphi process study on CVICU core competencies, and using wearable, home monitors during lung transplant evaluation.
