John J. Whitcomb, Ph.D., RN, CCRN, FCCM, is the Chief Academic Nursing Officer and Director and Professor at Clemson University. With 40 years of experience in critical care, Dr. Whitcomb served 26 years in the U.S. Navy, initially as a Hospital Corpsman (1983-1991) and then as a Navy Nurse (1991-2009), retiring as a Commander. He also served as Specialty Advisor to the Surgeon General for Critical Care Nursing, providing insights into domestic and combat settings, including Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was the Trauma Training Officer for the White House Medical Staff.
Dr. Whitcomb's research focuses on critical care issues such as end-of-life care, family visitation, cardiac arrest outcomes, and delirium. He has investigated sleep cycles in sedated and ventilated patients and researched workforce development and clinical education for nursing students.
He has held various leadership roles, including Chair of the Scientific Review Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at Clemson. He served on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) and as President of the South Carolina League of Nurses (SCLN). He also chaired the South Carolina Deans and Directors Nursing Education Committee and served on the SC State Board of Nursing. He currently represents Congressional District 3 on the SC State Board of Nursing. Dr. Whitcomb was a President’s Leadership Institute graduate at Clemson (2019), President of the Clemson Faculty Senate (2020-2021), and Provost Fellow (2021-2022). DR. Whitcomb has served on numerous committees for SCCM at the local and national levels.
