Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation
I, Tomohiro Abe, MD, PhD, am a postdoctoral research fellow at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation with over 12 years of experience as an emergency and critical care physician. My research focuses on sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy, aiming to improve survival rates in critically ill patients, particularly those with severe sepsis or trauma. My clinical experience with cases of thrombotic microangiopathy associated with overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) sparked my interest in the interplay between the complement and coagulation systems. I have reported that hyperactivation of the complement system in sepsis patients correlates with higher DIC incidence, more severe organ dysfunction, and increased mortality.
Since joining Dr. Lupu's lab in 2022, I have conducted basic research using non-human primate sepsis models to further investigate these systems. Building on this work, I am developing a translational research project focused on sepsis cardiomyopathy, integrating my expertise in hemodynamic assessment with advanced research techniques. Beyond critical care, I have explored regional and pre-hospital care research, broadening my understanding of healthcare systems and patient outcomes.
My ultimate career goal is to bridge basic science and clinical medicine to improve mortality rates in critically ill patients and contribute to systems that enhance outcomes across entire communities.
