Dr. Mara Serbanescu is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and is an early-stage investigator and practicing anesthesiologist and intensivist at Duke University in North Carolina. Her research focuses on translational/clinical microbiome science and microbiota-immune crosstalk in critically ill and post-surgical patients. In her clinical practice, she manages patients presenting with devastating complications that arise in the setting of acute inflammation, including organ failure, secondary infections, and delirium. Her research aims to identify features in the gut microbiota that contribute to these complications, with the long-term goal of identifying effective microbiota-targeted therapies that can improve outcomes in critical illness. Her research is currently supported by funding from the International Anesthesiology Research Society (IARS) Mentored-Research Award and the Duke Physician StrongStart and Dream Innovation Grant.
