Command Michael Kavanaugh, M.D. is an intensivist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD and the course director of the Miltiary Tropical Medicine Course. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Walter Reed in 2012 and Fellowship in ID/Critical Care in 2015. Previously, he served at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth from July 2015-June 2019 with duties including Infectious disease Department Head for two years and interim Chairman of Internal Medicine. He also served as an Internal Medicine Assistant Program Director for two years and was Chairman of the Internal Medicine Education Committee. He also served as the Director for Medical Services at the NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit, Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan from April-October 2016. During this time, he and his team rewrote the CENTCOM guidelines on snakebites and co-authored the Joint Theater Trauma System Guideline on Infection Control. He also was the Officer in Charge of Rural Rapid Response Team 34 for COVID relief in Texas.
He currently serves as the Military Tropical Medicine Course Director. Additionally, he is a staff Intensivist and Infectious Disease physician at Walter Reed. He also is an Assistant Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program and is a co-chair of the Clinical Competency Committee.
