University of Michigan Medical School
Joan Sirigiri (she/her) is a second-year medical student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a fervent dedication to improving critical care and promoting health equity. Before starting her medical education, Joan worked as a cardiac ICU nurse for 2.5 years during the COVID-19 pandemic. This intense period not only solidified her passion for caring for critically ill patients but also illuminated the pressing need for equitable healthcare practices, particularly for marginalized groups. During her time in the ICU, Joan witnessed the profound challenges that patients and communities faced, sharpening her commitment to patient-centered care and systemic change. Her nursing experience provided her with invaluable insights into the complexities of healthcare delivery and the importance of advocating for those who are often underserved. In medical school, Joan has continued to pursue her passions by collaborating with the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion. She has helped in organizing the annual Leadership and Enrichment for Academic Diversity summer camp and the Diversity in Medicine conference. These initiatives reflect her dedication to fostering diversity and inclusion within the medical community, inspiring future healthcare leaders, and addressing disparities in healthcare access and outcomes.
Joan's unique background as a frontline worker has given her a strong sense of prioritizing wellbeing with the demands of medical training. Outside of medicine, Joan finds balance through reading and long-distance running.
