Dr. Sarah Kandil is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in Critical Care Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and the Deputy Quality and Safety Officer at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. She has significantly contributed to pediatric care standards, notably reducing unplanned extubations and improving pediatric sepsis outcomes by decreasing the time to administer antibiotics in emergencies. Dr. Kandil co-chaired the research work group for the Children’s Hospital Association's Improving Pediatric Sepsis Outcomes (IPSO) and serves on the Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) research group. She is also the Vice-Chair for the Children's Hospital Association's Sepsis Community of Practice.
Dr. Kandil’s career in pediatric critical care is highlighted by her collaborations on several national projects advancing pediatric safety initiatives and clinical research. She integrates quality improvement science with clinical research, focusing on establishing best practices for consent in clinical trials. Early in her training, Dr. Kandil concentrated on understanding the nutritional status during critical illness and its impact on outcomes. Her research explored barriers to nutrition, the role of vitamin D in inflammation, and glucose control in critically ill children.
Dr. Kandil earned certificates in improvement science from the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She also leads multidisciplinary teams in national collaboratives to significantly reduce harm and improve patient outcomes. In her future endeavors, Dr. Kandil is dedicated to assessing how quality improvement science can enhance clinical research and study design implementations.
