My name is Dr. Michael Kiyatkin, MD, MS, and I am an anesthesia-intensivist, clinical researcher, and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY, USA. My areas of research interest are twofold: (1) prediction and prevention of postoperative respiratory failure and (2) identification and equitable healthcare intervention for socioeconomic vulnerability in the surgical setting. For the former effort, I regularly conduct retrospective observational studies of risk factors for respiratory failure. I am also conducting an international expert consensus study on best practices for prevention of postoperative respiratory failure. My goal is to perform an implementation science trial of a prediction-guided, prescriptive clinical decision support tool that recommends to both physicians and nurses a bundle of best practices for prevention of postoperative respiratory failure. For the latter effort, I am developing a novel surgical social vulnerability and health disparity risk index that integrates routinely collected yet often incomplete and disparate social vulnerability data alongside inherent surgical risk. As part of this effort, I am investigating which pre-hospital, perioperative, and post-hospital healthcare interventions mediate the association between social vulnerability and adverse surgical outcome. If modifiable mediators are identified, these may form the basis of another, healthcare system-wide implementation science trial. I am presently funded by an institutional mentored training grant and I hope to acquire independent funding next.
