Dr. Alexandra M. Waits is a dual-trained clinical fellow in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. A native Houstonian, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology before obtaining her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 2020. She completed a transitional year at Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Atlanta, followed by general anesthesiology residency training at Baylor College of Medicine. She is set to complete her fellowship training in 2026.
Dr. Waits’ clinical and research interests focus on acute postoperative pain management in cardiothoracic surgical patients, regional anesthesia, ICU survivorship, mechanical circulatory support, psychological safety for healthcare workers and trainees, and medical education. She has contributed to research in these areas and remains committed to advancing critical care and anesthesiology through academic scholarship.
She has been recognized with several awards, including the Baylor College of Medicine Anesthesiology Critical Care Award (Class of 2024) and the BCM Anesthesiology Bluebell Award for Kindness. Dr. Waits is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology (SCA), Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), Women in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (WICTA) SCA Subcommittee, Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (Baylor College of Medicine Chapter).
Dr. Waits is dedicated to optimizing perioperative and critical care outcomes, fostering an environment of psychological safety in training, and advancing medical education within the fields of anesthesiology and critical care medicine.
