Dr. Martin is Chief of the Division of Traumatology, Surgical Critical Care, & Emergency Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion for the Department of Surgery. He is the Program Director for the Traumatology & Surgical Critical Care Fellowships at Penn. He is also the Medical Director of the Trauma & Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and the Organ Donor Management Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Martin is a board-certified Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery for both Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Martin has clinical, educational, and research interests that involve caring for injured and critically ill surgical patients. More specifically, he focuses on innovating clinical trials and outcomes research in the clinical effectiveness of novel care pathways inclusive of trauma, infection, end-of-life care, and organ donor management. In these endeavors, he has served as primary investigator in numerous clinical trials and performed extensive retrospective outcomes work. He has partnered with many collaborators including outside institutions, foundations, and industry. He has been formally included in over 15 funded grants, many as primary investigator. He has presented his research work to numerous national & international organizations and published in a variety of prominent medical journals. Currently, he has over 150 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Martin is engaged academically in several professional societies and has leadership roles in the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society for Critical Care Medicine, the Surgical Critical Care Program Directors Society, and the American Board of Surgery to name a few.
