Norma Smalls-Mantey, MD FACS FCCM MBA is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Howard University Hospital, Washington, DC.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Tufts University, Massachusetts and graduated from Howard University College of Medicine, Washington, DC. Her general surgery residency was completed at Howard University Hospital. She then went on to finish her Trauma/Critical Care fellowship at the Medstar Trauma Center-Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, DC. She more recently received a traditional MBA in the Business of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University.
She held an 18-year tenure as the Director of Surgical Critical Care at the District of Columbia General Hospital in Washington, DC, during which time she held a number of hospital leadership positions.
Her service to the medical community is exemplified by her having held a number of offices in the American College of Surgeons, now culminating in holding the office of Governor of the local Metropolitan Washington, DC Chapter. She holds leadership positions in the national American College of Surgeons, as well.
In 2009, Dr. Smalls organized and founded the Metropolitan Washington, DC Chapter of the internationally renowned Association of Women Surgeons, and served as its first chapter President.
Dr. Smalls has been a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine since1983 and has actively contributed to numerous SCCM initiatives over the years. Several recent accomplishments have been her contributions to the Choosing Wisely Task Force (Quality and Safety Committee), the international VIRUS Study (Viral Infection and Respiratory Illness Universal Study),the Research Committee’s project entitled Assessing Critical Care Epidemiology and Delivery Using National-Level Census Data: A Society of Critical Care Medicine Scoping Review, and is the author of the SCCM Virtual Critical Care Rounds (VCCR) entitled Acid and Base Disorders.
