Harshank V. Patel is a second-year Internal Medicine resident at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine (WMED). He earned his medical degree from Smt. N.H.L. Municipal Medical College in India. His research focuses on advancing the diagnosis and management of coagulopathies, with a particular emphasis on Thromboelastography with Platelet Mapping (TEG-PM), gender-based differences in coagulopathic states, and the use of TEG-PM in sepsis prognostication.
Harshank V. Patel is currently involved in multiple research projects, including investigating gender dimorphism in COVID-19-associated coagulopathy and trauma-induced coagulopathy. He is also exploring the role of TEG-PM as an early prognostic marker in sepsis. His ultimate goal in his work in coagulopathy assessment is the development of individualized, evidence-based treatment protocols that improve patient outcomes.
In addition to his research, Harshank V. Patel contributes to quality improvement initiatives to optimize TEG-PM's interpretation and clinical utility among residents. He is also an active member of the TEG task force at Bronson Methodist Hospital, collaborating with Dr Tjasa Hranjec to support providers in using TEG-based protocols for balanced blood product resuscitation.
Harshank V. Patel is deeply committed to advancing the fields of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine within Critical Care. His work centres on personalised medicine to improve patient care through better diagnostics and tailored management strategies. At the Society of Critical Care Medicine Congress 2025, he looks forward to collaborating with experts in the field further to refine the role of Haematologists in Critical Care as he works toward his career goal of becoming a Haematologist and Medical Oncologist.
