I have focused my career in three arenas: clinical care of the critically ill, late-translational clinical research, and medical education. I practice critical care in the medical, surgical/trauma, and cardiothoracic ICUs at our quaternary care academic hospital. I am passionate about high-acuity clinical care, routinely lead the code team and am a core leader on our Resuscitation Review and Rapid Response Committees.
My educational work has concentrated on the management of the decompensating patient. I was the former critical care anesthesiology fellowship program director, have created multiple student clerkships in critical care / shock, and run a bi-annual simulation-based emergency intubation course. My educational efforts have been recognized with several prestigious department, medical school and system-wide teaching awards.
My research endeavors are diverse and patient-focused. I am a site lead for the Pragmatic Critical Care Research Group (PCCRG) and participated in the PREOXI trial. I am also the site lead for the Society for Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM’s) Discover IHCA trial. My active research includes work studying vitamin C use in liver transplantation (clinicaltrials.gov NCT04756063). I am on the SCCM insulin guidance committee, focusing on glucose measurement and management in the critically ill, and I published a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and management of non-hepatic hyperammonemia (PMID 35447602). My current QI work is focused on emergency intubation approaches and outcomes.
