Postoperative arrhythmia affects one in 10 patients who have surgery. The consequences of arrhythmia in the perioperative period can be devastating, from stroke to visceral ischemia. Increased awareness and knowledge of this complex condition is critical for improving patient outcomes. This session will focus on evaluation and management of postoperative arrhythmia, incorporating current evidence-based management guidelines and a hearty dose of expert tips to help you successfully manage postoperative patients.

Learning Objectives:

List common causes of arrhythmia in postoperative patients to serve as a differential diagnosis for evaluation
Describe the sympathetic response to surgery and how pain, anxiety, and delirium contribute to it and define strategies for minimizing issues that contribute to postoperative arrhythmia
Discuss common pharmacotherapeutic challenges around the time of surgery, strategies to overcome these challenges and prevent postoperative arrhythmia, and drugs commonly used after surgery that promote conduction abnormalities and lead to arrhythmia
