Managing Challenging Patient-Ventilator Interactions

This session will improve attendees' understanding of the vocabulary used in patient-ventilator interactions, enabling clearer communication and better decision-making. Speakers will describe how to identify and address the challenges associated with ventilator triggering, particularly in cases of early (reverse) triggering and high patient effort. Speakers will also provide insights into managing the delicate balance between under- and over-assistance in mechanical ventilation, ensuring both patient comfort and adherence to lung-protective strategies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate key terminology related to patient-ventilator interactions for use in clinical discussions and ventilator management decisions
  • Analyze common issues in ventilator triggering, including early (reverse) triggering and high patient effort and develop strategies to resolve these issues
  • Discuss adjustment of ventilator settings and sedation to achieve an optimal balance between patient comfort and lung-protective ventilation strategies
