A new definition of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was recently established. Given the great degree of heterogeneity of ARDS, clinicians need to know the new criteria as well as why changes were made to the Berlin definition of a decade ago. Clinicians also must consider the practical importance of this new definition; does it matter for the current practice of critical care? This session will explore the content and reasoning behind the new definition and will conduct a pro/con debate regarding its relevance to clinical care.
