Computer science and technology help ICU clinicians improve the quality of care. The adoption of electronic patient information systems has created an opportunity to analyze clinical data for research, quality, and administrative purposes. However, the challenges of extracting data from electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical databases at scale are not clearly described because of a lack of standard approaches. SCCM’s Discovery, the Critical Care Research Network, consists of a team of experts who have achieved successful research outcomes and extensively use clinical databases. Speakers will discuss their experiences and approaches for extracting, normalizing, and storing information from various sources of heterogeneous information and EHRs. This session will provide valuable insights into the tools, methods, and challenges involved in understanding and extracting data from clinical ICU databases.
