Pediatric cardiac arrests outside the PICU have become rare. But children get sick on the ward and are transferred to the PICU, and some of these children could be recognized earlier and perhaps avoid PICU admission. There is no single standard definition for clinical deterioration on the ward; this has significant research implications. There are also patients who are transferred to the PICU following a rapid response but never receive ICU interventions. How can these patients be identified and perhaps kept out of the ICU? This session will explore the interface between the PICU and the ward and the role of the pediatric intensivist.
