There's Blood Everywhere but in the Patient: Transfusion Issues in Trauma Patients

Treatment of acute blood loss is a key part of trauma care. This session will delve into several aspects of transfusion, including whole blood versus blood component therapy, diagnostics to evaluate coagulopathy, and possible complications associated with blood component transfusions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of whole blood transfusion compared to blood component transfusion in hemodynamically unstable patients
  • Describe the diagnostics for evaluating coagulopathy in trauma patients, including classic testing (prothrombin time/INR, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen level) and functional testing (thromboelastography/rotational thromboelastometry)
  • Discuss possible complications of transfusion in trauma patients and regulatory reporting issues for complications
