At the Intersection of Age and Injury: Special Considerations in the Care of the Older Patient With Traumatic Injury

The number of older adults who sustain traumatic injuries is increasing. It is anticipated that, by the end of the decade, older adults will comprise nearly 40% of trauma admissions. Older adults who sustain trauma have worse outcomes than their younger counterparts. As trauma patients leave the hospital, their caregivers also face significant burdens. This session will focus on the critical care management of older adults and their loved ones, providing evidence-based and practical recommendations for the care of the older adult with traumatic injury.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss acute management of trauma, nuances of evaluation, and resuscitation of the older trauma patient
  • Assess age-related syndromes such as frailty, comorbidities, and delirium in the acutely injured older adult and discuss interventions to address these factors to improve outcomes
  • Review the use of multiprofessional teams focused on early consultation and operative and nonoperative strategies to optimize outcomes for older adults with complex chest wall injuries
