Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the Grading of Recommendations, Assessments, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) process as it applies to the stress ulcer prophylaxis guidelines
  • Delineate risk factors for clinically important stress-related gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Compare and assess proton pump inhibitors, histamine-2 receptor antagonists, and no therapy for prevention of stress-related gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Evaluate the role of enteral nutrition for the prevention of stress ulcer bleeding
  • Identify best practices for the route, dose, and duration of stress ulcer prophylaxis
  • Rationalize the initiation and cessation of stress ulcer prophylaxis in patients who have had previous therapy
  • Discuss the application of the recommendations and best practice statements to the care of critically ill adults
