The gut microbiome is important in both health and disease. A number of factors can alter the intestinal mocrobiome, including bacterial overgrowth, antibiotic overuse or disuse, benefits of supplementation, fecal transplants and changes in intestinal transit time. The role of the intestinal microbiome in specific disease states and potential therapeutic implications in modification of the intestinal microbiome will be discussed.
