Bridging Gaps in the ICU: Strategies for Language and Cultural Humility

We will outline the language and cultural barriers that impede communication and decision making in the ICU as well as the impact of these factors on humanized care quality. We will discuss the importance of professional interpreters and diverse interpreter modalities as well strategies to optimize discussions with an interpreter. In addition, we will outline mechanisms to address the triple threat of low health literacy, language and cultural barriers more broadly.
