Redefining the Intensivist

The term intensivist has conveyed different meanings in peer-reviewed manuscripts that address critical care. Recently a retrospective analysis was performed to characterize the literature pertaining to the use the terms intensivist, critical care physician, or similar terms. Differences exist in how those that participate in the care of the critically ill or injuries are trained, certified, and credentialed in acute care facilities.  The Society of Critical Care Medicine last published an intensivist definition in 1992. As such, SCCM has established a task force to redefine the term intensivist to provide a definition applicable globally.
