This presentation will discuss how increasing pediatric ICU admission prevalence, organ failure, and longer lengths of stay are largely driven by a rising prevalence of children with chronic comorbid conditions who have high levels of illness severity and technology dependence at baseline with frequent ICU admissions requiring escalations of chronic organ support. The focus of the presentation will be on the optimal location of care for these children when they are experiencing exacerbations of baseline chronic illness, and discussing the pros and cons of medically complex children receiving care at local community hospitals versus being transported to dedicated children’s hospitals even when far from home.
