Though delineated as a distinct subspecialty in 2006 by the American College of Graduate Medical Education, palliative care has been an integral part of critical care since inception of intensive care units. Moreover, critical care practitioners have nearly four decades of evidence informing palliative care provision in the ICU. This talk will define palliative care, differentiate palliative care from hospice care and end-of-life care, and review the evidence base for palliative care delivery from critically ill patients and their family members.
